Three Chinook’s Edge students receive Julian Sacher Scholarship

Three Chinook’s Edge students have received the Julian Sacher Scholarship. Superintendent Kurt Sacher presented the $1,500 scholarships to three graduates from École Olds High School just before the Christmas break. Leyton Fazakas, Liam Morgan and Sage Petersen are this year’s recipients.

“Congratulations to these deserving students,” says Kurt Sacher, Superintendent. “Each of these individuals embody the characteristics of academic excellence and caring for others. I’m impressed with their achievements to date, and look forward to seeing their success in the future.”

Leyton Fazakas
Leyton Fazakas is pursuing a Bachelor of Science degree at the University of Calgary. Math and the sciences were his favorite subjects in high school. “Once I achieve my degree, I hope to inspire others to pursue Mathematics and hope to teach and assist others in sharing my passion,” he says.

Karla Pohl, a teacher from Olds High, says Fazakas worked at his studies, was self-motivated and self-confident, always striving for excellence. “He understood the dedication necessary” to do well, she says, and was willing to help others. “He worked well with his peers in group situations, and was also a fantastic independent learner. Leyton was always eager to assist his peers with their learning.”

Liam Morgan
Liam Morgan is enrolled at the University of Calgary taking biological sciences. He says he is hoping to attend medical school to become a doctor or medical examiner.  Morgan says, “My body and brain have always interested me. How could I work with both to achieve success in school, sports and in a social community?”  Morgan says he is interested in going to medical school so he can help others.

Brad Clapp, a retired teacher from Olds High, says “Liam is a hard working student who sets an excellent example for his peers.” Clapp says he admired Morgan’s work in the humanities. “He has an interest in the world at large. He is a very capable student but more importantly has a hunger to understand the complexities of human society.”

Sage Petersen
Sage Petersen is attending Queen's University in Kingston, Ontario, taking biology and minoring in psychology.  She says that during high school, “my passion for biology flourished, more specifically the anatomy and physiology of the human body. I find it truly fascinating to learn about how we function and the interconnectedness of all aspects of our bodies.” Petersen hopes to become a physical therapist.

Jana Kemmere, teacher and Vice-Principal at Olds High, says that during the time she taught Petersen, she observed not only her academic dedication but also her “remarkable character.” Kemmere says, “Sage stands out not only for her academic accomplishments but for the compassion she extends to everyone around her… Whether it was collaborating on group projects, helping others with presentations, or simply being a kind and attentive listener, Sage’s quiet strength and generosity have made her a well-loved member of our school community.”

The Julian Sacher Scholarship has been given annually since 2020, to a student or students who have a strong academic average in grade 12 diploma level subjects, are pursuing a degree in science, and show care and concern for the people around them.
