Board Highlights - December 17, 2025
Highlights for the Chinook's Edge Board meeting held December 17, 2024
Preparing for the 2025 trustee election
The Board’s trustee on-boarding ad hoc committee shared highlights of their discussions about plans for the October 2025 school board election. The committee was pleased to hear the Corporate Secretary and Communications Coordinator will work together to make information available to interested candidates. The Board, through its committee, is focused on how the Board will on-board new trustees to support their learning.
Chinook’s Edge Board receives numeracy update
The Board received its annual report about numeracy from Jason Drent, Associate Superintendent of Learning Services. Drent shared that the division continues to use diagnostic testing at the beginning of each year, which gives teachers information about how they can support the learning of each student. The Board heard that the division is also exploring opportunities to use artificial intelligence to support student learning in math.
The Board learns more about academies
The Board was interested to learn more about academies in Alberta and in the division. Jason Drent shared that academies take a variety of forms. Typically in Chinook’s Edge they are an extended opportunity for students to engage in a passion, and often provide a connection to community expertise.
Board updates policies
The Board reviewed two policies: Capital Plan Priorities Exhibit 1, Board Committees Exhibit 1. The Capital Plan Priorities policy describes how the division will evaluate which projects are prioritized when asking the provincial government for funding for school construction projects. The change to the Board Committee Exhibit was to ensure the Board’s Facilities and Maintenance Committee review the capital plan policy annually.
The next meeting of the Board of Chinook's Edge School Division is scheduled to take place on Tuesday, January 7, 2025.
