Two Chinook's Edge students qualify to attend national science fair

Two Chinook’s Edge students have qualified for the national science fair, after both receiving gold medals at the Central Alberta Rotary Science Fair, held at Red Deer Polytechnic on March 29, 2025. Also a number of Chinook’s Edge students received recognition for their science projects.

Claire Friesen, a Grade 9 student from Cremona School, received a gold medal and “Best of Fair” in the Grade 7 to 12 category, as well as an invitation to attend nationals. Her project is called “What goes up must come down.” This is Friesen’s third invitation to attend the national science fair.

Oceana Jones, a Grade 12 student from École Olds High School, received a gold, and was first runner-up in the Grade 7 to 12 category. Jones also received an invitation to attend nationals. Jones’s project is called “Autism”. Jones was awarded a full year scholarship to Red Deer Polytechnic.

The national science fair will be held in Fredericton, New Brunswick, from May 31 to June 7, 2025.

● Eli Bird, a Grade 6 student from Cremona School, received a gold medal and best of fair for his
project: “Does Pollution Affect Neuron Function”
● Alejandro Ikenaga, a Grade 6 student from École Deer Meadow School, received a silver medal and second runner up, in the Grade 5 / 6 category, for his project: “Edible Water Bottles”.
● Natalie Conrad, a Grade 6 student from Olds Koinonia School, received a silver medal for her project: “Instant Cameras”
● Eliza Skenduli, a Grade 6 student from Hugh Sutherland School in Carstairs, received a silver medal in the Grade 5 / 6 category, for her project: “Your Kidneys”
● Heath Poland, a Grade 5 student from Hugh Sutherland School, received a bronze medal in the
Grade 5 / 6 category, for his project: “Why do birds have different feathers”

● Keiara Lewis, a Grade 12 student from École Olds High School, received a silver medal in the Grade 7 to 12 category. Lewis’s project is called “When does it end?” Lewis also received a special award, the “Dr. Yvonne Buchanan-Sedun Psychology Award”
● Cheyanne Card, a Grade 10 student from École Olds High School received a bronze medal for her project “Stress and Memory”.
● Jebnael Ikenaga, a Grade 7 student from École Deer Meadow School, received a special award from the Discovery Wildlife Centre. Ikenaga’s project is called “Dessert Straw”
● Millie Koch, a Grade 8 student from École Deer Meadow School, received a special award from the Discovery Wildlife Centre, for her project called “Crystal Clear”
