Strengthening welding skills - and dreams of the future
Introducing… Salvador Vermeulen! This Grade 11 student, attending Ecole Olds High School, is happy to be enrolled in welding class and specifically in Readiness for the Skilled Trades Level 2.
Vermeulen says he loves working with his hands, which is part of why he enjoys welding. Also, his Dad works in the trades, which is a positive influence on him as well.
He hopes to take as many opportunities as possible through dual credit, off campus and through Careers, in order to build his skills before high school graduation. “It’s a great opportunity that the school division has given, and it definitely unlocked a pathway into what life looks like after high school,” says Vermeulen.
Of note, Vermeulen was selected to work with Olds College Welding Instructor, James Palidwar, to prepare for the Regional Skills welding competition that will be held at Red Deer Polytechnic on March 15.
In the future, Vermeulen would like to run his own service truck as well as work in a shop. After that, he would like to complete his Red Seal and become an inspector. He also hopes welding will allow him to see the world.
