School Fees

In the spring of 2017, Bill 1: An Act to Reduce School Fees was passed by the Government of Alberta. As a result, there are no basic school fees for the 2017/2018 school year on.

The Division has been directed through Ministerial Order to

  • Cease charging fees or costs for textbooks, workbooks, photocopying, printing or paper supplies.
  • Only charge fees approved by the Minister of Education.
  • Only charge fees up to the amounts in the schedule approved by the Minister of Education.
  • Only charge amounts to cover projected costs of providing for the subject matter of the charge.

Q. How are fees to be determined?

A. All fees must be based on the projected cost of providing the goods or services. All fees must not be greater than those listed in the fee schedule approved by the Minister of Education. You can find each school’s approved fee schedule on the school’s website.

Q. Can the school charge fees not on the approved fee schedule?

A. If it is not on the school’s fee schedule approved by the Minister of Education, they cannot charge the fee. They will have an opportunity in November to seek approval for new activity fees, field trip fees, non-curricular travel fees, and extracurricular fees. There will be another opportunity in February. There is no ability to add instructional fees during the year.

Q. How does this impact the school’s budget?

A. The Division will receive a school fee reduction grant of approximately $778,000. This grant was passed on to school budgets in the same proportion as school fees.
